Getting back to "Like it never even happened" After Smoke and Soot
6/15/2022 (Permalink)
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of South Bend, NE will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Why Is It So Important For the Correct Clean Up After A Fire?
6/15/2022 (Permalink)
Cleaning up a fire-damaged property is essential in restoring the preloss condition of the house by eliminating debris, soiling, and any odors left by the fire. Depending on how the fire cleanup is done, it can help reduce the number of items to replace during the restoration process.
Fire cleanup requires various inputs, ranging from clean water, detergents to specialized cleaning agents. For the best outcome, at a fair cost, there is a need to choose wisely. Our SERVPRO technicians assess the soiling prevalent in the affected area to help make the right choice. If we determine there are only hydrophilic residues, we can use plain water to clean the soiled areas. Other types of residues may require professional cleaning agents.
Agitation is a crucial aspect of fire cleanup, especially when dealing with massive or stubborn deposits. There are many ways to agitate a soiled surface, but it is crucial to choose the right one depending on the type of underlying material to avoid damaging it in the process. Our SERVPRO technicians utilize:
- Air pressure
- Water pressure
- Rotating Brushes
- Scrubbers
- Blasting
We can also use different techniques simultaneously. For example, when cleaning carpets through hot water extraction, we utilize both air and water pressure to agitate the soiled areas. Options such as sandblasting are only feasible when eroding the material being cleaned does not damage it. Soda and sandblasting are useful when removing charring from frames and other unfinished surfaces.
Various solvents used in the cleaning process can leave permanent damages such as stains, discoloration, or fire damage to the physical qualities of the material. Our SERVPRO technicians take caution to avoid wetting surfaces, especially when cleaning porous materials. For surfaces made with specialized materials such as acoustic tiles, we use specialized cleaning techniques such as Peroxide-Active cleaning to safeguard the physical qualities of the tiles.
So give us a call at SERVPRO of South Bend today at 574-233-8377! We are faster to any disaster and we are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

Flooding Can Cause Water & Mold Damage
6/7/2022 (Permalink)
Following the 500 year flood in February of 2018, thousands of homes were inundated with water, caused by a record snow fall, then the fast melt when we received a record rain fall. The St. Joseph River has a flood level of 5'6", this year it hit 33'. Water entered homes in many ways. This home had water enter through a crack in the foundation at surface level. The water came through then flowed down the wall damaging the drywall, insulation and stud work.
Unfortunately the home owner was not in town during the storm; the basement sat 2.5 weeks before anyone noticed the damage. In that time mold had begun to grow on the entirety of the damaged area compounding the damage and clean up. SERVPRO of South Bend NE responded to the call in less than an hour. The area was contained to prevent spreading the mold, deconstruction, clean up and the drying process was started within a few hours.

Plumbing Problems Are No Problems For SERVPRO
5/25/2022 (Permalink)
Having plumbing problems in your home can be a big headache, especially when something like a toilet overflow starts happening unexpectedly and requires sewage cleaning. If one of your toilets is overflowing when you take a shower, it is likely being caused by a clog between the shower and the sewer. As the shower runs, the water is stopped by the clog and pushed into the wastewater lines and comes out the first spot it can, which in this case is your toilet.
Sewage Cleaning
When this type of problem happens, it can create a major mess in your bathroom. It can be even worse if you take a shower upstairs and the overflow is happening in a bathroom you don’t use every day, such as in the basement or in a guest bathroom. If you have a toilet overflow that has gone unnoticed for a few days, to the point where water damage and mold has begun to set in, there are many professional water damage remediation companies that can thoroughly repair and clean up the area. Proper sewage cleaning is important to ensure everything is fully decontaminated to prevent disease.
You may be able to clear out the clogged pipe yourself using an auger “snake”:
- Through the toilet drain.
- Directly through the floor drain after you remove the toilet (this is often easier for cleaning out the clog).
- If this doesn't work, you can also take a snake through your drain clean-out which may be located in your basement or crawlspace. Be aware that sewage could spill out after removing the cap if it's clogged here.
Hiring a professional is often recommended to avoid spending money and time only to realize the problem is bigger than you expected or unreachable by a common snake.
Fix Your Pipes
A clogged pipe can be an easy, quick fix and may not cause much of a mess or damage if taken care of immediately. But, if the clog has been building up for many years and is far down in the sewage lines, it could require professional tools and the hand of an experienced plumber.
So call us today! We are faster to any disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

Time Is Of The Essence When A Pipe Bursts In Your Business
5/20/2022 (Permalink)
If you have a pipe burst in your business, you no doubt see the damage water can do. However, you may wonder why everyone says you have to hurry to clean it up. After all, the damage has been done, right? Maybe not. You don’t want to deal with mold cleanup, too.
Here are a few ways floods can harm your building even after the water stops rising:
• Black mold
• Structural damage
• Foul odor
How does hurrying to call for professional restoration services help? These explanations may help you understand the process.
Stop Molding
When water rises in your business, it creates a uniquely humid area. This humidity helps mold spores all over the building grow. Within 24 to 48 hours, mold can become visible. However, getting started on the restoration process as soon as possible can help pull the moisture from the area and stop mold in its tracks.
Keep Structures Safe
The longer the water sits, the more it can damage your business’s walls and floors. As the water stays in place, it seeps through the walls and makes them softer. With enough time, this can make your building unsafe to be in altogether. Furthermore, the more soaked everything in the room where the pipe burst becomes, the harder it is to rid the area of mold.
Prevent the Smell
Mold is the main reason why you need to call a professional restoration crew. As you probably know, mold smells awful. Naturally, this isn’t good for business. Instead of waiting for that odor to fill the building, stop it before it starts. A restoration company can send an odor control specialist to help.
When it comes to flooding in your business, there’s no sense in waiting. A pipe burst can be a big enough problem without mold, structural problems, and a foul odor on top of it. Contact the professionals at SERVPRO of South Bend and let us come in and make it "Like it never even happened."

When Your Home Floods - Call SERVPRO!
11/21/2021 (Permalink)
The team at SERVPRO of South Bend has the necessary training and experience to remediate seepage-based flooding. Do not hesitate to call!
Although no one can stop the rains, there are ways to limit flooding in your home. Overland flooding or backups due to overwhelmed storm sewage systems are but two of the sources of floodwaters in the lower levels of your home. Regardless of the source of the water, we have the technicians and the equipment to help you recover.
Even though the water causing flood damage to your home may be drawing your eyes down as it seeps into the foundation or lower levels, the problem often is at the roofline. Clogged gutters and damaged downspouts cause water to pound down near the perimeter of your home, saturating the soil and ultimately invading through the slab, poured, or cinder block foundation. We can respond to and restore the damage but expect suggestions from our managers or production crew to minimize or even eliminate future flooding.
The grading and landscaping around your home can also contribute to the seepage of floodwaters into the foundation. Over time even correctly graded ground can erode and shift, encouraging rainwater to drain into your home rather than away from it. SERVPRO crews also see scenarios where plantings surrounding your home contribute to excess water moving into the porous materials making up the base and protecting the lower levels of your house. Irrigation systems or merely an overdone watering of foundation gardens have the unhappy result of a wet home.
SERVPRO evaluates the characteristics of the water flooding into your home to determine whether it needs to be contained and disposed of according to local regulations. The sooner you get our team to your home the more likely that the water checks out as Category 1. If the soil around your home is loose, dirt particles can flow in with the water. Lawn chemicals, fertilizers, and even pet wastes can taint the water, requiring careful handling. Gutter overflow can also contain bird and animal waste and mold, threatening the flooded area with microbial growth if not disinfected and dried out after the flood water evacuates.
Submersible pumps and water extractors pull most of the flood water out of your home. If Category 1 we can drain it outside, but take care to deposit far from the house to prevent it from flooding again. We use moisture meters and infrared scanners to locate hidden pockets of moisture and to set a baseline for drying goals. SERVPRO crews position air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to dry out the affected space. The moisture numbers are monitored to ensure we achieve standard levels.
The team at SERVPRO of South Bend has the necessary training and experience to remediate seepage-based flooding. Do not hesitate to call us if we can help!
Water Damage Is Difficult, But SERVPRO of South Bend Can Handle The Toughest Problems! (Part 1 of 2)
11/7/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of South Bend responds quickly to a water or fire, or mold damage emergency, 24 hours a day.
There's nothing quite as difficult for a commercial establishment as dealing with water damage. However, knowing what to do when disaster strikes can prevent you from experiencing unnecessary emotional upsets for yourself, your employees, and your customers and mitigate the economic strain of lost business. There are many steps you'll need to take to get your commercial property back in order following a water damaging event. Contacting a team of skilled water damage restoration experts from SERVPRO is a good first step.
Quick Water Removal Mitigates Monetary Loss
The longer excess water remains on your commercial property, the more likely you are to suffer from costly water damage repairs to structural properties like ceiling tiles, insulation, drywall, and flooring. Then there is the concern of water damage to your capital investments: inventory, furniture, carpeting, electronic equipment and paper documents. Having a team of skilled water damage restoration experts like SERVPRO to begin immediately removing standing water can prevent you from spending unnecessary money on repairs.
Quick Remediation Prevents Secondary Water Damage.
Another benefit of a quick reaction to the pressing problem of water intrusion is that fast extraction helps prevent secondary water damage. Unfortunately, water damage creates a moist, wet environment within your business. Moisture and high humidity offer mold an opportunity to grow and spread throughout structural materials and wood furniture and fabrics. If your business deals with food distribution, high inventory loss may be a costly negative effect. For this reason, it's critically important to have standing water removed as quickly as possible. SERVPRO can arrive, usually in about one hour, with water removal equipment to meet any problem.

Fast Restoration Helps You Get Back In Business
If the water intrusion, by way of a storm, flood, leak, or the aftermath of fire extinguishing causes severe water damage to your commercial business, you may have to relocate temporarily while water damage restoration work is being completed. Closed doors affect customer traffic, employee earnings, and your bottom line. SERVPRO is here for you where storms impact your business
10/26/2021 (Permalink)
When you know that a storm is likely to impact your business, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, focusing on storm preparedness before a disaster occurs can help to keep yourself, your staff and your property safe.
1. Document the Building’s State Before the Storm
When a building is damaged, it’s often important for property management to provide the business’ insurance company with documentation of the destruction. However, it may also be beneficial to have photographs of your property prior to the incident. By showing an insurance adjuster what the business looked like before it sustained damage, you can help to ensure your claim is accurate.
2. Establish a Line of Communication
Storms can come on suddenly, and in the event that the property needs to be evacuated, it’s useful to know how to contact all employees in a timely manner. As part of your storm preparedness plan, you may consider asking all staff members to provide you with a way to reach them quickly before a disaster. Since you may not be present in the building when an emergency occurs, it can also be wise to create a list of tasks that the last person to exit should perform. An example might include making sure all doors and windows are closed.
3. Inspect the Property
Inspecting the structure before a storm can help you prevent damage, because leaks or malfunctioning equipment may worsen any problems that do occur. An inspection will also allow you to observe any openings in the building, which can happen when roof shingles are cracked or missing. This may let rain get inside more easily. If you see signs of a problem, you should contact emergency restoration services to prevent additional issues.
As a property manager, storm preparedness can be an important element of your job. Documenting the building before a disaster, establishing a line of communication and inspecting the structure can help you to prepare your business for any situation.
So give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and are ready to help get things back to "Like it never even happened."

Tips For Dealing With Water Damage And Mold After A Home Flood
6/25/2021 (Permalink)
When water damage strikes your home or business, the steps you take, and the speed in which you take them becomes crucial to getting you back to normal in as little time as possible. At SERVPRO, we deal with water damage each and every day, and because of that have the processes down to a science!
What to do when your home floods
• Understand your home's location.
If a flood is coming through the basement or ceiling of your home, you will need to immediately shut off the main water supply to prevent the damage from spreading. Check the valve in your basement or next to your washing machine.
• Identify the source of water.
All types of water can affect your home. Your basement, ground-level water heater, or fire hose (if you have one) could be the source of the water. Shut off the supply in order to stop the water damage.
• Call the professionals.
If you can't shut off the water yourself, you should call a professional licensed water damage cleanup company to help get your home dried out and cleaned, without exposing your home to more flood damage.
Conclusion
When water damage hits your home or business, it can take a devastating toll on the environment. That's why keeping a few tips in mind can help you stay the course. Clean up is easier than you might expect, and with some careful thought and effort, you can stay one step ahead of the disaster.
What To Do When Your Business Floods
6/25/2021 (Permalink)
Take Action Immediately: Contact your insurance company, and start planning your recovery. This means securing all loose items in the floor, removing all damaged materials from the walls, removing flooring from the affected area, and cleaning the area with soap and water. Let us provide you with photos and video documentation of the damage so you can get started with the clean-up process!
Is your business experiencing mold?
Mold is often found growing in damp areas, which is why you should never install carpet in a bathroom. Floors can get wet easily, and water can easily damage your laminate, tile or hardwood floors, causing rot and mold to grow in those areas. It's extremely important to keep your flooring dry. This article provides specific tips to dealing with water damage and mold after a home flood.
Mold is one of those problems that is difficult to spot at first, but not impossible to detect. It tends to grow at the root of things. If your house is flooded, you'll see damp wood floors and water stains in the bathroom and laundry area, a good indicator that there might be mold involved. The first step is to remove the furniture, drywall, and everything else from the area that's soaked.
If disaster does strike, give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and here to help get you back to “Like it never even happened.”
Severe Storms Are Just Around The Corner - What To Do & Not Do
6/16/2021 (Permalink)
When a severe storm ravages your home in South Bend and causes damage both indoors and out, it can be difficult to know what to do. Do you stay inside until help arrives, or do you leave? What if the storm is still raging and leaving seems more dangerous than staying put? To help you figure out the best thing to do in a tricky situation, here are a few storm tips:
After any severe storm, your primary concern is your safety. Before acting, ask yourself the following questions:
• Is it safe to stay in the home?
• Are there electrical hazards, slip and fall hazards, or any other major health risks?
• How bad is the water damage? Does it look like the roof, ceiling or floor is about to cave in?
• Is there an area of the home that is still secure and in which you can move around comfortably?
When Not To Stay in the Home
If the storm has passed, the best thing to do would be to leave the home until help arrives. However, if the storm is still raging, your situation is much more complex. Depending on the severity of the storm, it doesn’t make sense to go out if you don’t have to. However, how can you tell if being in your home is more dangerous than being in the elements? These storm tips may help:
• When the roof is caving in or materials are falling, it’s time to get out.
• If any part of the home’s electrical wiring is exposed and touching water, it’s time to get out.
• If any part of your home is exposed to the elements and the storm is still active, it’s time to get out. This is especially true if there is lightning.
If you are forced to choose between staying in a damaged home or going out into the storm, you need to think carefully and act fast. Every minute you don’t make a decision could mean you’re a minute closure to real danger. Consider the storm tips above to make the best decision for you and your family.

Don't Wait When A Pipe Burst Your Business's Bubble! Contact SERVPRO Right Away!
6/15/2021 (Permalink)
Does Your Business Have An Emergency Response Plan?
6/15/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of South Bend is a national sponsor of the American Red Cross' Ready Rating Program, and as part of our community service, we are helping local businesses prepare for disasters. We call these an E.R.P. (Emergency, Response, Plan). One of the best reasons to start an E.R.P. is because disasters seem to happen when you are away from the office or on vacation. Contained in an E.R.P. are a few of the following: property overview, building access information, contact information, utility information (shut off locations) and other useful information that we tend to forget about when faced with a tragedy. For more information about starting an E.R.P. for your business today please call SERVPRO of South Bend at 574-233-8377 to help prepare you in case of a disaster.
Smoke and Soot Cleanup In South Bend By SERVPRO
6/15/2021 (Permalink)
Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your South Bend Home.

It goes like this:
** Put on some rubber gloves
** Scoop out the waste
** Take some water and bleach solution and apply it to the affected areas
** Let it dry
Most articles will throw out a warning saying “if you’re not sure whether you can do it, or don’t have the proper equipment, it is best to call a professional”. That’s where you would call SERVPRO.
We’d like to throw out another warning!
Cleaning up raw sewage on your own is something you should never do!
Here’s why:
#1 – It can be hidden. – Any SERVPRO crew member can tell you stories about customers that decided to clean-up their own feces only to call in weeks or months later complaining about smells and disfigured walls, cabinets, and floors. Sewage will find its way into any and all porous surfaces. Even things like drywall and cabinetry aren’t safe. And it’s not as simple as just spotting the sewage with your eyes. It requires state of the art equipment, which SERVPRO has, to identify areas that have been damaged by sewage. So unless you have an infrared detection system handy and know how to use it, call SERVPRO.
#2 – It can be costly. – Times are difficult for everyone and money is tight. It’s easy to justify doing it yourself instead of paying to have SERVPRO clean and disinfect for you. But today’s shortcut is tomorrow’s nightmare! Again, you’re dealing with a toxic situation that if not handled properly can create very real health dangers for you and your family. Not only that, if not properly mitigated, you could be looking at a serious mold issue in the not so distant future on top of all of the other issues described above. And if you think sewage cleanup is costly, wait until you’re stuck with a bill for mold remediation services! At least your sewage clean-up is covered by insurance…that’s not typically the case if you’ve got mold and it’s the result of you not taking appropriate measures when dealing with the sewage issue that created the mold!
So, if you’ve stumbled upon this article due to a sewage back-up that’s spilled into your home or office, do yourself a favor and call us, SERVPRO. Our technicians are certified to perform raw sewage cleanup and can provide you with peace of mind knowing the area affected is professionally cleaned.

The Importance of Hiring Professional Carpet Cleaners
Professional carpet cleaners are the only people who should be trusted to do the job. Anyone with less experience or certification will likely not do the job correctly. And their carelessness could end up costing a lot more in the end.
Carpeting is typically one of the most long-term investments in the home. Most people associate high-cost flooring with tile, marble or hardwood, but carpet can carry a high price tag as well. There are various fibers and matting to choose from, as well as the padding beneath it. When it’s all said and done, it can cost just as much if not more than some other options. Once that investment is installed, great care should be taken to keep it in the best condition possible. This will mean regular vacuuming in high-traffic areas and regular maintenance from professional carpet cleaners.
Why should someone always hire professional carpet cleaners?
Professionally trained technicians have certification in all types of fibers and construction, so they know which products and equipment to use and how to employ them properly. The technician can assess the area for any spot treatment that may be necessary and will know which tools and specialized products to use. They will also be aware of the correct methods to complete the job effectively. Technicians will also inform the customer of ways that they can prolong the life of their carpeting and how to properly treat spills and accidents should they occur.
What can happen if someone doesn't use professional carpet cleaners?
A lot of damage can occur if a certified technician or firm is not hired to do the job. They can over-saturate the fibers and promote an environment that may foster mold and other microbial growth in time. If using improper equipment, the fibers can be damaged, which would result in replacement being required much sooner. If the wrong cleansing agents are used, or they are not properly rinsed out, they may damage the fibers or make future soil adhere quicker, which will require cleaning more often than would otherwise be necessary.
What should a customer expect when they hire professional carpet cleaners?
Upon arrival, the technician will assess the carpeting. Once that is complete, the process can begin. First they will vacuum the floor during a process called dry soil removal. This removes any loose items in the flooring. Then soil suspension and extraction will take place. The technician uses a preconditioning agent that is mixed to separate the soil from the fibers. Various methods are employed to extract the soil from the flooring. Grooming may also be done to improve the fiber piles, matting, and to equally disperse protectors or conditioning agents. Then the drying process can begin. Carpets that have been professionally cleaned should be dry in less than 24 hours. Homeowners can assist in this process by ensuring the right temperature is maintained, and there is adequate ventilation.
When hiring a carpet cleaning technician, make sure that they have received their certification through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). The IICRC is a globally-recognized organization that is the leader in certifying technicians and firms in the restoration, cleaning and inspection industry.

Why SERVPRO? We are the fire recovery experts!
11/27/2020 (Permalink)
A fire can be devastating to your home or business. After the fire trucks leave, your property will likely suffer from not only fire and smoke damage, but also widespread water damage and flooding from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO of South Bend has specialized fire and water damage restoration training and experience to quickly clean up and restore your home to pre-fire condition. They also can remove the pervasive smoke odor and deep-clean soot from upholstery and carpet.
Board-ups - In some cases, firefighters may break windows and cut holes in the roof in order to vent the fire. It is extremely important to secure openings to your home or structure using sturdy, durable materials designed to protect it from both weather intrusion and intrusion by outsiders.
Types of Fire/Smoke/Soot
Wet Smoke – Plastics and Synthetics; Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood; Fast burning, high temperatures, dry, powdery, non-smeary residues.
Protein – Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Fuel Oil Soot – Furnace Puff Backs. Other Types – Tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue.
What to do after a fire:
- Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork.
- Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
- If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
- Clean and protect chrome with a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
- Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
What NOT to do after a fire:
- Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting SERVPRO
- Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
- Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat, or water.
- Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
- Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may damage the garment further.
SERVPRO of South Bend has what it takes to restore your home back to preloss condition.
Why SERVPRO? Knowledge and Expertise-Mold vs. Mildew
11/14/2020 (Permalink)
Mold damage to your home can cause serious problems. Mildew growth, on the other hand, is generally less severe. It can be tricky to tell the difference between them, but there are a few ways to distinguish the two categories of fungi.
Similarities
The words mold and mildew are often used interchangeably. This is likely due to the fact that both are fungi, and they share some similarities, including the following:
- Thrive in wet locations
- Spread quickly via spores
- Cause a musty odor
- Can be cleaned with fungicide
Because both mold and mildew need moisture to thrive, the same prevention techniques can be used for both fungi. Dry up water from leaks, spills, etc. as quickly as possible, and keep the humidity in your home lower than 50%. If you live in a particularly humid area, you may need to use a dehumidifier to keep the air sufficiently dry. Also, an air purification system can prevent both mildew and mold damage by capturing the spores before they have a chance to attach to a surface and colonize.
Differences
Although the two categories of fungi share a few characteristics, they have many differences. Mildew is generally lighter in color and has a fluffy, powdery or downy texture. Mold is typically darker and may appear slimy or fuzzy. Mildew grows only on surfaces, but mold can grow deeper within walls and beneath surfaces. Because of this, mold tends to be more difficult to eliminate. On the other hand, homeowners can usually remove mildew easily with a cleaner and a cloth or brush. Mold growth generally requires more intensive remediation methods and possibly professional intervention.
Whether you are dealing with mold or mildew, it is important to act quickly to minimize growth and mitigate the damage. If you are dealing with severe mold damage, an experienced restoration team can help you get your home back to normal quickly and safely.
So give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."
Why SERVPRO? Handling Mold Damaged Belongings
11/14/2020 (Permalink)
Mold can be a frustrating problem to deal with. It is a common problem for homeowners and, once it has started growing, it can be difficult to remove. Not only can it affect the structure of your house, but it can grow on your belongings as well. The following are some mold cleaning tips that can help you restore your home.
1. Scrub Hard Surfaces With a Cleaner
Because it cannot reach beneath the surface, mold damage on hard and non-porous materials is relatively simple to remove. These items can usually be cleaned with water and an antibacterial cleaner. More often than not, they can be easily salvaged.
2. Use a Washing Machine or Dry Cleaning Service
For objects made with porous materials, mold cleaning takes a bit more work. Some objects, such as clothing, bedding, and stuffed toys can be cleaned in a washing machine if the damage is not too severe. Dry cleaning is an option for larger belongings and materials that cannot be cleaned in the laundry.
3. Have Items Professionally Cleaned
While you may think that it is impossible to get mold damage out of your books, paintings, and paper documents, this is not always the case. Professional services can use the equipment, such as an Esporta machine, that can remove bacteria and contaminants from a variety of items.
4. Throw Out Severely Damaged Items
It may not be ideal, but in some cases, you will need to throw out some items. If mold forms beneath the surface of an object, mold cleaning can be difficult. Unless these belongings are difficult to replace or have a lot of sentimental value, it may be easier to simply discard it and purchase something new.
If you have mold growing in your house, you should contact a mold remediation company as soon as possible. They can locate any mold growth and perform cleanup and repairs. They can also help salvage your damaged belongings.
SERVPRO Tips: How to clean up properly after a storm
7/31/2020 (Permalink)
If a pipe bursts in your home you will likely have some flooding to handle. A flood from a storm, however, takes remediation to another level. Not only do you need to dry out your home, but you also will need to disinfect your home, both in areas that are directly affected and those that may be vulnerable to secondary damage.
The first step to remediating any water damage is to remove the excess water from the area. With a flood with Category 1 water, the process is pretty straightforward:
- Remove standing water
- Dry remaining surfaces
- Repair or replace damaged materials
Floodwater from a storm, however, is considered Category 3 water. It is contaminated and may contain all sorts of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. If you have flooding from a storm, flood mitigation experts must clean your home thoroughly after getting rid of the water.
Anything that comes into contact with the floodwater must be disinfected before your home is considered habitable again. Technicians use specific detergents and industrial-strength cleaners to make sure all surfaces are sterilized. Then they test to ensure that the cleaners did the job well.
Even if part of your home doesn’t have flood damage, it may still be impacted and need attention. For example, it is a good idea to have technicians clean your HVAC unit. That much floodwater can significantly increase the humidity in your home, making all of it susceptible to mold growth. Cleaning and drying the ducts can discourage fungus from growing in hidden areas.
While there’s no such thing as a good kind of flooding, damage from clean water can be easier to clean up than issues resulting from stormwater. Getting rid of the water is not enough; you must also make sure that your home is properly disinfected before technicians are finished with the job.
So give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and we are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

Why SERVPRO when it comes to Storm Damage Restoration
6/21/2019 (Permalink)
Ice damage, hail damage, storm damage, hurricane damage, flooding and wind damage all have the potential to cause far-reaching damage when they strike. However, not all is lost. Storm restoration can help salvage most of the items in a house. Homeowners count their losses too quick before engaging the services of storm restoration experts.
The services of home restoration can be enlisted for damages such as river flooding, hail damage, flood water damage, ground water damage, ice damage, flooding, hurricane damage and wind damage. No calamity is too big or small for them. In light of the recent storm damages that have rocked the country, it is prudent for homeowners to have contacts of water restoration experts on storm remediation.
It is important to know the effects of harsh weather so that homeowners understand the need for storm remediation. Wind damage, for instance, can cause heavy roof damage. Roof damage is mainly from loose tiles or shingles. Wind damage after winter can also cause moisture from ice damming or formation of ice dams to sip through the roof. Homes with wooden roofs can experience wood swelling. This leads to further roof damage necessitating immediate repair.
Ice damming and ice dams should be professionally handled because of the risk they pose. A simple leak can advance into a huge crack. It is ill-advised to stay long before conducting roof repair. Ice damming also exert weight on the roof. The ice dam pools should not be left to stay on the roof for too long.
There are various strategies that homeowners can take as measures of storm remediation. For instance, those who live in areas more prone to winter damage or wind damage can consider installing roofs with a higher slope. This goes a long way in reducing the cost of regular roof leak repairs. It also minimizes roof leaks.
Postponing roof repair especially from ice dams and ice damming only leads to more costs. A simple roof leak repair can turn into a roof replacement if not handled immediately. It is also crucial to conduct roof inspection, especially after a storm warning. This minimizes the costs to be incurred in roof repair after the storm damage happens. A roof inspection will identify all the damaged places, and the roof repair will be handled in time. All roof leaks are also sealed to ensure that the roof is able to withstand the coming weather damage.
Hurricane damage, flood water damage, hail damage, wind damage, ice damage, storm damage and river flooding experts are trained to handle such harsh weather conditions. The water restoration arrive at the scene of the damage immediately. Water restoration efforts must be done promptly so as to prevent further damage. These activities are done after an assessment of the extent of flooding, ground water levels, and the flood water. An assessment is what informs their actions to deal with the storm damage, ground water, and flooding.
It is important to note that ice damage, hurricane damage, roof damage, flood water damage and hail damage all have different methods of water restoration and storm remediation. The team, therefore, needs to come up with the right storm restoration strategy based on the type of damage at hand.
Homeowners need to explain the type of damage so that the home restoration experts can come with the right tools and gear to carry out storm remediation. One such tool is a flood pump. These flood pumps are used to drain water after a flooding or water damage. A flood pump can also work automatically. It can be left in a room to drain the ground water. The Need for Storm Damage Restoration
6/19/2018 (Permalink)
The Need for Storm Damage Restoration
The pumps are able to handle the ground water even as it rises. Commercial flood pumps are also available to deal with massive flood water situations such as river flooding. In a home application, the flood pumps can be used with vacuums.
Another common issue is frozen pipes, especially after a winter damage. Frozen pipes prevent a free flow of water through the pipes. If the temperatures are still low, it may take time before the frozen pipes unfreeze. It is not advisable to apply heat to the frozen pipes. Handling of these frozen pipes should be left to the storm restoration or home restoration experts.

How does Mold Remediation work?
6/18/2018 (Permalink)
Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our “typical” process:
- Emergency Contact - (574) 233-8377
The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.
- Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
We carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.
- Mold Containment
Our professionals use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.
- Air Filtration
Our specialized filtration equipment allows our Professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.
- Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. We’ll use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. It may be necessary to remove and dispose of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, to remediate heavy mold growth.
- Cleaning Contents and Belongings
We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and disinfect your belongings. We’re also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.
- Restoration
Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have been removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. The restoration step gets your home or business back to normal.

When Mold Hits Your W. St. Joe County Home
5/19/2018 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Ventilation system cleaning in South Bend
Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in indoor air quality. It is important to have your system inspected in your home or business. Having your ventilation system cleaned can help extend the life of your equipment, giving you cleaner air to breathe. When your HVAC system hasn't been watched in a while, while operating it could be circulating dust, odors, and other contaminates. By having your HVAC system serviced you can help eliminate offensive odors, help to restore peak energy efficiently, and help to reduce the potential for mold growth. SERVPRO of South Bend does both duct and HVAC inspections and cleanings in all of the Michiana area. Our technicians are highly trained and are ready to help you breathe easy today.
